Why We Chose a Thanksgiving Trip to DC Instead of the Traditional Holiday

This year, Jake and I decided to do something a little different for Thanksgiving. Instead of the typical at-home plans, we’re packing up the car and heading to Washington, D.C. We’ll be driving pretty much all day Thursday. It feels kind of like a mini adventure for us as a married couple.

One of the biggest reasons we chose this trip was because we didn’t have to use any PTO. Since we already had the days off work for the holiday, it just made sense to take advantage of that time and do something meaningful together. Travel can be expensive in more ways than one, and using vacation time always feels like a trade-off, so this felt like a smart and fun alternative.

Our hotel is also doing a Thanksgiving dinner, which takes a lot of stress off. We don’t have to cook, plan a big meal, or worry about making reservations somewhere that’s open. We can just show up and enjoy the holiday together. I actually love that it’s simple and a little different than what we’re used to.

The rest of the weekend is going to be all about walking, exploring, and taking in as much history as we can. We’re planning to see a ton of the memorials and museums, and just experience the city at our own pace. No strict schedule, just time together and memories being made.

One thing I’m especially excited about is that we’re also going to a Washington Capitals game while we’re in town. Hockey games have kind of become “our thing,” and every time we travel, we try to knock out a new NHL arena together. Going to a Capitals game means we’ll be one arena closer to seeing all 32, which honestly just feels so special and fun to work toward as a couple. It’s more than just a game for us. It’s another memory, another city, another little piece of our story.

I think sometimes we feel like holidays have to look a certain way, but as a young married couple, we’re learning that we get to make our own traditions. And this year, our tradition looks like a road trip, hotel Thanksgiving dinner, and wandering through Washington, D.C. together!
